The number of cases against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, including charges of murder, is increasing. If the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Law decide, Bangladesh will request India to send Sheikh Hasina back to the country.

In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, Interim Government Foreign Affairs Advisor M. Touhid Hossain shared this information.

Touhid Hossain stated that there are “many cases” against Sheikh Hasina. He added, “If the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Law make the decision, a request will be made to Delhi to return her.”

Hossain acknowledged that this situation has created “an embarrassing situation for the Indian government,” and added, “India is aware of the matter. We are confident that they (India) will handle it with care.” However, he did not provide further details on the issue.

Reuters reached out to India’s Ministry of External Affairs for a comment, but they declined to respond immediately.

Touhid Hossain emphasized that Bangladesh seeks good relations with all countries, including India, China, and the United States. Regarding the potential timeline for Bangladesh’s next election, he mentioned that by September, the timeline would become clearer. He noted that the members of the Advisory Council are currently focused on restoring normalcy in the country, expressing hope that the situation will stabilize by early September.

Hossain also pointed out that none of the advisors in the interim government have political ambitions. Regarding the priorities of the interim government, he said they are trying to implement some reforms. In his view, “Our system is severely corrupt. Institutions have been destroyed. They need to be revived.”

In the interview, Hossain also discussed the Rohingya issue. He believes that Bangladesh has already provided refuge to a significant number of Rohingya people and can no longer accommodate more. Therefore, he urged other countries, including India, to provide shelter to the Rohingya, who are citizens of Myanmar.
