The Islami Chhatra Shibir–backed Oikyobodho Shikharthi Jote has won a sweeping victory in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections, securing the key leadership posts and a majority of editor positions.

Shibir-supported candidates clinched the top three positions—Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), and Assistant General Secretary (AGS)—along with nine out of twelve editor posts. Independent candidates managed to win only three editor positions.

    Key Results

    • Vice President (VP): Abu Sadik Kayem (Shibir) won with 14,042 votes, leaving his closest rival Abidul Islam Khan of Chhatra Dal far behind with 5,708 votes.
    • General Secretary (GS): S. M. Farhad (Shibir) secured 10,794 votes, defeating Chhatra Dal’s Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim, who polled 5,283.
    • Assistant General Secretary (AGS): Muha. Mohiuddin Khan (Shibir) won with 11,772 votes.

Shibir-backed candidates also triumphed in positions such as Liberation War and Democracy, Science and Technology, International Affairs, Student Transport, Sports, Common Room and Reading Room, Human Rights and Law, Health and Environment, and Career Development.

Independent candidates won the posts of Social Service, Literature and Culture, and Research and Publication.

    Smooth Polls, Disputed Results

Voting was held peacefully from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. across eight centers, with more than 78 percent turnout. Chief Returning Officer Professor Mohammad Jasim Uddin praised the polls as “a model election for the future.”

However, several candidates rejected the results, alleging widespread irregularities. Chhatra Dal candidate Abidul Islam Khan denounced the election as “a planned farce.” Independent candidate Umama Fatema also boycotted the process, terming it a “shamelessly fraudulent election.”

    Political Context

Islami Chhatra Shibir had been virtually absent from Dhaka University during the Awami League’s 15-year rule, with its organizational activities suppressed. Following last year’s political change in July, the group resurfaced on campus, and within a year, managed to dominate DUCSU.
