Interim government Home Affairs Adviser M. Sakhawat Hossain has stated that Thursday is the final deadline for police officers who have not yet returned to duty. If they do not join by Thursday, it will be assumed that they are not interested in continuing their employment.

He made these remarks today in response to journalists’ questions at the Secretariat. This was his first visit to the Secretariat after taking office.

In a stern message directed at all political parties regarding extortion and land-grabbing, M. Sakhawat Hossain said, “Look at the situation of a political party today. Such a large, historic party, whose name is intertwined with the independence of Bangladesh, and now their members are on the run. If you think you can come, take control, seize markets, seize docks, engage in extortion… I have requested the army chief to break your legs.”

On August 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country in the face of widespread student and public protests. On August 8, an interim government was formed with Dr. Muhammad Yunus as the Chief Adviser. That night, 14 of the 17 members of the interim government were sworn in at Bangabhaban. Today, two more advisers of this government took their oaths. M. Sakhawat Hossain has been appointed as the Home Affairs Adviser in this interim government.
