- ChhatraLeague hooligans continue harassing general students
Bogura, 30 July: In Bogura, two teenage girls and a boy were detained by the police on their way to private tuition. They were carrying school bags with books and notebooks when they were intercepted by leaders and activists of the Chhatra League at the central hub of the city, Saatmatha. The girls were harassed for some time before the police took them to the station for questioning. Another teenage boy was also taken from Saatmatha in a similar manner. The incident occurred around 3:30 PM on Monday in the Saatmatha area of Bogura.
The police later clarified that the students were not arrested but taken to the station for questioning and would be released afterward. Meanwhile, students in Bogura organized a protest march demanding a fair investigation and justice for the killings of students and other citizens across the country as part of the anti-discrimination student movement. During the central program at Saatmatha, three students were detained by the police around 3 PM, including two girls and one boy.
Additionally, members of the RAB, BGB, and other law enforcement agencies were conducting searches for suspicious individuals at various points, including Mohila College Road and Banani. Among those detained was a girl named Ruku Akter, who claimed to be a student of the Philosophy Department at Dhaka University.
In another event, students gathered for a small protest at Jaleshwaritala, and around 3:30 PM, they took a position near the Kali Temple in Jaleshwaritala. Law enforcement later arrived and dispersed the gathering by 4 PM. Previously, on July 16, there was a clash between students and Chhatra League at Saatmatha over the demand to abolish quotas in government jobs, which resulted in several journalists and students being injured by thrown bricks and stones.
On July 19, a 16-year-old boy named Siam Shubho was shot dead by police in Seujgari Amtala Mor area in Bogura during the ongoing student protests. According to district police, 15 cases have been filed in connection with these incidents, and at least 145 individuals have been arrested and sent to court.
Confirming the detentions, Shahinuzzaman, Inspector (Investigation) of Bogura Sadar Police Station, said that the students were detained for questioning and would be released afterward.
