She has been ordered to appear before the tribunal by November 18
In connection with allegations of killings during the anti-discrimination student movement in July-August the tribunal issued the warrant against the Awami League President and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, based on charges related to these events.
On Thursday, October 17, the Chief Prosecutor, Advocate Mohammad Tajul Islam, applied for the warrant before the International Crimes Tribunal, which is headed by Chairman Justice Md. Golam Murtuza Mazumder and two other judges. During the application, the Chief Prosecutor presented details of killings, mass murders, extrajudicial killings, and the Pilkhana massacre during Hasina’s tenure in office.
Following this, the tribunal ordered the issuance of the arrest warrant against Hasina and instructed her to be produced before the tribunal by November 18. Earlier, the prosecution had announced plans to seek arrest warrants for 50 individuals, including Hasina, in connection with atrocities committed during the student movement in July-August.
The trial regarding the genocide committed during the anti-discrimination student movement is ongoing, and the international community is closely monitoring the proceedings. The application stated that Hasina’s arrest is necessary for the investigation into charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.
The charges mention incidents occurring between July 15 and August 5, during the student movement, with those injured and later dying on various dates also falling under these charges. The location of the events is described as all of Bangladesh.
The nature of the crime involves mass shootings and killings of unarmed students and civilians, with the intention to partially or wholly eliminate them, under the direction and planning of the first to ninth accused.
In another case concerning genocide and crimes against humanity, the International Crimes Tribunal also issued arrest warrants for Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and 45 others who are in hiding. They have been ordered to appear before the court by November 18 as well.
