Nahid Islam, the Information Adviser to the interim government, stated that the sudden release of water from upstream into Bangladesh has caused flooding. She accused India of acting inhumanely by opening the dam without providing any prior warning or allowing time for preparedness. This, she said, demonstrates India’s lack of cooperation with Bangladesh.

The Information Adviser made these remarks during a press briefing in front of the state guesthouse Jamuna today, following a meeting of the advisory council of the interim government. Also speaking at the event were Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Adviser on Environment, Forest, and Climate Change and Water Resources, and Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, the Adviser on Youth and Sports.

Nahid Islam further commented, “We hope that India will quickly abandon such anti-people policies against Bangladesh. The people and students of Bangladesh are frustrated with India’s stance.”

She added that it is crucial to find a proper solution on how the people of Bangladesh and India can jointly protect themselves from such natural disasters. The people of Bangladesh have long been advocating for their fair share of water resources.

Expressing hope, the Information Adviser mentioned that the relationship between Bangladesh and India should remain free of tension and that state relations should be re-established on the basis of fairness.

Meanwhile, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a press release today, stating that the recent floods in the border districts of eastern Bangladesh are not due to the opening of the Dumboor dam gates in Tripura. The statement emphasized that the concerns in Bangladesh regarding this are not based on reality.
