General Wakar-Uz-Zaman, the Chief of the Bangladesh Army, has affirmed the military’s commitment to assisting the interim government in its efforts to conduct necessary reforms and facilitate free and fair elections. He stated that the army is prepared to provide whatever support is required to achieve these objectives.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday afternoon (August 13) after a scheduled event at the Rajshahi Cantonment, General Wakar-Uz-Zaman noted that the situation in the country has largely stabilized. However, he acknowledged that the police are still recovering from the trauma of recent events. Once the police overcome this trauma, they will be able to fully resume their duties, further normalizing the situation.
The Army Chief mentioned that discussions have been held with the Ansar, RAB, BGB, and other security forces, and the situation has now calmed down. He stated, “I can say that the law and order situation is entirely under our control at this point. The police have already begun their work in various stations, and we are providing them with the necessary protection. Once the police are fully operational, the situation will become even more stable, and at that point, we will return to the cantonments. Until then, we will continue our work.”
Addressing concerns about minority communities, General Wakar-Uz-Zaman observed that no significant incidents have occurred in the Rajshahi division, which he described as a positive sign. He emphasized the importance of maintaining this peaceful environment and called for collective efforts to lead the country toward progress, stating, “We want to move towards a better future. A positive environment has been established, and if we all work together, we can advance the nation.”
When asked about the detention of MPs and ministers from the ousted Awami League government, the Army Chief explained that they were provided shelter for their safety. He added that if any accusations or legal cases arise against them, they will be held accountable through due process. “However, we do not want any extrajudicial actions or attacks. We have provided them protection due to the threats to their lives. Regardless of their party, ideology, or religion, we are committed to ensuring their security,” he said.
The event was attended by Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Dr. Dewan Muhammad Humayun Kabir, DIG of Rajshahi Range Anisur Rahman, Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ahmed, Rajshahi Superintendent of Police Saifur Rahman, and senior army officials.
Earlier, the Army Chief held a meeting with senior officials from the police and other law enforcement agencies at the Rajshahi Cantonment to discuss the overall law and order situation.
