Six U.S. Congress Members Call for Sanctions on Obaidul Quader and Asaduzzaman Khan

Six members of the U.S. Congress have called for sanctions against Awami League General Secretary and former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, as well as former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan. The request comes in response to allegations of human rights violations during the quota reform movement.

In a letter sent last Wednesday, members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives stated that the government of Sheikh Hasina had used law enforcement agencies to carry out disproportionate and unlawful force against protesters, leading to numerous casualties. The letter claims these actions were part of a broader campaign of repression against dissent by the Awami League.

Despite these human rights violations, the party’s leaders have not been held accountable. Given this context, the U.S. lawmakers have urged the imposition of sanctions on Obaidul Quader and Asaduzzaman Khan.

The letter was signed by Congress members Lloyd Doggett, Edward J. Markey, William R. Keating, Chris Van Hollen, James P. McGovern, and Al Green.
