Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, confirmed that she has no plans to relocate from India to another country. In an exclusive interview with Deutsche Welle, Joy provided insights into her current situation.

Amid widespread public protests in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina resigned and sought refuge in India. Joy disclosed that although the decision to resign was made a day prior, it was not immediately announced. He explained, “She decided a day earlier. Only a few of us knew about her plan to announce her resignation and ensure a constitutional transition of power. However, when the protesters began marching towards the Ganabhaban, we realized there was no time left and urged her to leave immediately.”

The quota reform movement in Bangladesh escalated into mass protests, resulting in hundreds of casualties. The Hasina government faced allegations of excessive force in handling the protesters. Under intense pressure, Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana swiftly left the country.

When asked about the leadership of the Awami League, Joy stated, “She has no current plans to return to politics. Our family has faced coups three times. For the third time, we have lost everything and been forced to live abroad. Except for my mother and me, our family members have been abroad for a long time. We are settled here and have adapted to this life.”

Addressing speculations about Sheikh Hasina’s relocation, Joy clarified, “Sheikh Hasina is fine and currently residing in Delhi. My sister, who lives in Delhi, is with her. She is in good health but understandably saddened by recent events.”

Joy further expressed his mother’s deep sorrow, saying, “She is heartbroken that the people of Bangladesh, for whom her father sacrificed his life and her entire family endured so much, would drive her out and attack her. Despite her imprisonment, hard work, and numerous developments for the country, we never imagined such a response from the people.”
