Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has issued a call for a collective effort to rebuild the nation amidst ongoing challenges.
Speaking at a press conference on August 6, Dr. Rahman stated, “This country belongs to all of us. Our expatriate brothers, driven by frustration, have ceased sending remittances. It was not our organization’s policy to discourage remittances. Without our country, we cannot survive. Therefore, we urge expatriates and businessmen to unite in rebuilding our devastated nation and to fulfill our duties as responsible citizens.”
The press conference, moderated by Central Executive Council member and Secretary of the Central Propaganda and Media Department, Advocate Matiur Rahman Akand, was attended by key figures including Naib-e-Amir and former MP Professor Mujibur Rahman, Maulana ANM Shamsul Islam, Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum, and others.
Dr. Rahman highlighted the recent student movement demanding reforms in the government job quota system. “This peaceful movement, which began in early July, had legitimate and just demands recognized by the entire nation. Unfortunately, many students and citizens were killed, thousands were injured, and many went missing. We express our deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for their acceptance as martyrs. We thank Almighty Allah for the positive changes we are witnessing and pray for the swift recovery of those injured,” he said.
He expressed sorrow over the long-standing government’s departure on August 5 without providing any guidance. “The student-led movement involved people from all walks of life, who have all faced some form of oppression. This spontaneous outpouring of public frustration was peaceful, but provocations led to acts of vandalism and violence. We have consistently condemned these miscreant activities and urge all citizens to act as guardians of each other’s property,” Dr. Rahman emphasized.
He continued, “We call upon the entire nation and our organization’s members to protect the property and rights of all citizens, regardless of religion. There are no majorities or minorities here; all born in this country are equal citizens. We must firmly suppress miscreant activities and promise full cooperation with the administration. Our leaders have already begun fulfilling their responsibilities across the nation. However, eradicating miscreant activities requires a collective effort from society and the administration.”
Dr. Rahman concluded by thanking the attendees and expressing hope for future cooperation with journalists in nation-building efforts. He acknowledged the Honorable President’s recent discussions with political parties, during which several demands were accepted and some implemented. “One of our primary demands was to quickly form an interim government to address the current crisis. The President has committed to dissolving the parliament and establishing an interim government swiftly.”
In his closing remarks, Dr. Rahman reiterated the urgent need for the President to dissolve the parliament and expedite the formation of an interim government to conduct meaningful national elections and establish a true people’s government. He thanked everyone once again for their time and attention.
