The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has decided not to press hard on the selection of advisors for the interim government. The party has no objection to Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus leading the interim government. BNP emphasizes the urgent need to fill the power vacuum in state governance swiftly.
This decision was made in principle during a BNP Standing Committee meeting on Tuesday morning, according to multiple responsible sources within the party.
BNP leaders believe that following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government amid student and public protests, it is crucial to quickly establish an interim government and appoint advisors to manage state affairs. BNP Standing Committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud told Prothom Alo, “Today’s change is the result of the students’ blood-soaked movement. Personally, I think it is best to align with the students’ demands.”
Sources indicate that BNP views the current process of forming an interim government positively. However, if the interim government’s tenure becomes prolonged, the party may raise objections. To maintain constitutional continuity, BNP seeks a national parliamentary election as soon as possible. At this moment, BNP does not oppose the opinions of the leaders of the quota reform movement.
At a press conference at the Gulshan office, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called for the dissolution of parliament and the swift formation of an interim government. Within hours, the President dissolved the parliament.
BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo told Prothom Alo that it is imperative to fill the power vacuum swiftly as the country is currently unprotected, leading to law and order issues. He stated, “For so long, due to enforced disappearances, murders, extortion, and arrest trade by the police, they have lost their moral standing and have now withdrawn themselves. The assumption of responsibility by an interim government will change this uncertain situation.”
It has been reported that BNP will initiate field programs to keep pressure on the state apparatus. A rally will be held today, Wednesday, at 2 PM in front of BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan. Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will deliver the keynote address virtually.
