Nobel laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has agreed to assume the role of Chief Advisor of the interim government, following a proposal from the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Earlier, the movement’s coordinators proposed that Dr. Yunus lead the interim administration. This announcement was made by Nahid Hasan, one of the movement’s coordinators, in a video message posted on Facebook early Tuesday morning at 4 AM.
According to a reliable source, Dr. Yunus initially hesitated to accept the role. He explained, “When the students approached me, I was reluctant because I have many commitments to fulfill. However, they repeatedly urged me, saying, ‘We have fought and sacrificed in a bloody movement. Many people have lost their lives; students and civilians have been killed. Now, Bangladesh has the opportunity to be governed properly, and this can only happen if you take responsibility. It will not be good for any of us if you refuse.’ Their insistence and the gravity of the situation made me reconsider.”
Dr. Yunus continued, “The students’ sacrifices and the people’s struggles made me realize my duty. Therefore, I informed them that I am willing to accept the responsibility of leading the interim government.”
In his video message, Nahid Hasan elaborated on Dr. Yunus’s acceptance: “We had initially planned to take 24 hours to outline the interim government structure, but considering the urgent situation, we are announcing it now. We have decided to form the interim government with Dr. Muhammad Yunus as the Chief Advisor. We have spoken with him, and he has agreed to take on the role.”
Nahid Hasan also requested the President to appoint Dr. Yunus as the Chief Advisor to the interim government. He added, “We will announce the names of the remaining members of the interim government by morning and expect the formation process to be underway shortly thereafter.”
