In Narsingdi, six Awami League leaders and activists were killed following a violent incident that erupted after gunfire was exchanged. The killings occurred in Madhabdi, Narsingdi, when Awami League members were pursued and beaten by protesters after shots were fired at them. The incident took place around 1:30 PM today, Sunday, in the wudu area of a mosque adjacent to the Madhabdi municipality.

Three of the deceased have been identified: Delwar Hossain (Shaheen), Chairman of Char Dighaldi Union Parishad (UP), Delwar Hossain, the younger brother of Anwar Hossain, Chairman of Sadar Upazila, and former district volunteer league president Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan.

Eyewitnesses and local residents report that thousands of protesters had been blocking the Dhaka-Sylhet highway since noon today, as part of a student movement against discrimination. Around 1 PM, more than a hundred local Awami League leaders and activists, led by Sadar Upazila Chairman Anwar Hossain, arrived at the scene. The Awami League members asked the protesters to disperse, but the request was refused. Subsequently, ruling party leaders and activists fired shots at the protesters, injuring at least four individuals. Among the injured, Alamin (25) and Sumon (30) are receiving treatment at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, while the other two have been taken to a local private hospital.

At this point, the protesters, armed with sticks, pursued the ruling party members, who then took refuge inside the large mosque in the municipality area. Inside the mosque’s wudu area, at least ten individuals were repeatedly beaten by the protesters, resulting in the immediate deaths of Delwar Hossain, the city fishermen’s league president, former district volunteer league president Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan, local labor league leader Anisur Rahman, and two others.

As of 6 PM, when this report was prepared, the bodies of the six deceased remained at the scene, and no police officers had been observed arriving.

Zakir Hossain, the younger brother of Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Anwar Hossain, stated that they were in a peaceful stance. His group had entered the mosque after being chased by local BNP leaders and activists. Inside the mosque, they were beaten to death. At least four injured individuals have been sent to the hospital.

Madhabdi Police Station’s Acting Officer-in-Charge, Mohammad Kamruzzaman, confirmed that the six individuals were beaten to death in the mosque’s wudu area. The victims were various levels of Awami League leaders and activists. The killings were reportedly carried out by BNP members in collaboration with the protesters. Efforts are ongoing to identify the deceased.
