Professor Asif Nazrul, the legal advisor to the interim government, has stated that the Cybersecurity Law will definitely be repealed. He made this comment while presiding over a consultation meeting on the proposed amendments to the Cybersecurity Law 2023.

The meeting was organized this Thursday afternoon at the Judicial Administration Training Institute in the capital by the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs.

Most speakers at the meeting voiced their opinions in favor of repealing the Cybersecurity Law. In his closing remarks, Asif Nazrul, as the presiding legal advisor, said, “The Cybersecurity Law must be repealed. That’s the direction we are heading.”

He emphasized the need for discussion on whether the entire law would be repealed immediately. Asif Nazrul added, “Ultimately, this law will be repealed. When a new law is introduced, its basic approach will focus on providing cybersecurity and, particularly, protecting citizens.” He also mentioned that steps have been taken to withdraw all cases under the Cybersecurity Law and its predecessor laws.

Earlier, the controversial Digital Security Act was repealed last year. The government at that time replaced it with the Cybersecurity Law.

Former Law Minister Anisul Haq had informed the national parliament that from the passage of the Digital Security Act in September 2018 until January 31, 2023, a total of 7,001 cases had been filed under the law across the country.
