London, July 22 – Catherine West, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), has voiced the UK’s profound concern over the recent wave of violence in Bangladesh. Reports indicate that the unrest has resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries, sparking international outcry.
“The UK is deeply concerned by the violence we have seen in Bangladesh in recent days, with reports of hundreds killed and thousands injured. The loss of life is unacceptable. Peaceful protesters must not be subject to violence,” said West.
Highlighting the importance of fundamental rights, she emphasized, “The rights to protest, to peacefully assemble, and to express different political views are rights which the UK holds dear and must be protected.”
West also called for the swift restoration of internet and communication services, which have been disrupted amid the turmoil. “Access to the internet and communications services must be restored quickly so people in Bangladesh can be reconnected with their families and friends in the UK and across the globe.”
The UK government has urged an immediate cessation of violence and a constructive approach to resolving the crisis. “We urge an end to the violence and loss of life and call on all sides to find ways to restore calm across Bangladesh, including by establishing a pathway for constructive political dialogue in the interests of the people of Bangladesh,” West added.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected. The people-to-people connections between our two countries are strong, with a robust Bangladeshi community in the UK contributing enormously,” she concluded.
The situation in Bangladesh continues to evolve, with international observers closely monitoring developments and calling for peace and stability in the region.
