The National Economic Council (NEC) has been formed with Interim Government Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus as its chairperson. All members of the advisory council will serve as members of this council. The Cabinet Division issued a notification on Monday (September 9) regarding the formation of this council.
The notification states that officials assisting the council will include the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary/Secretary, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, the Secretary of the Planning Division, members of the Planning Commission, and secretaries from relevant ministries or divisions.
The council’s mandate includes providing guidance on policies and strategies related to overall economic development activities; finalizing and approving long-term and medium-term plans, annual development programs, revised annual development programs, and action plans; reviewing the progress of the implementation of long-term and medium-term plans, annual development programs, and revised annual development programs; making necessary decisions and providing directives for socio-economic development; and forming any committee deemed necessary to assist in the responsibilities of the National Economic Council.
The notification also mentions that council meetings will be held as needed, and the Planning Division will provide secretarial support to the council. It was further noted that the previous notification issued by the Cabinet Division on January 18 has been canceled.
