Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain stated that the killing of people at the border is a significant obstacle to strengthening the relationship between Bangladesh and India.

He made this remark on Monday (September 9) during a meeting with an eight-member delegation led by UNDP’s Resident Representative in Bangladesh, Stefan Lillal, at his office in the Secretariat.

He emphasized the need to strengthen Bangladesh-India relations at the public level, stating, “When killings occur at the border, it creates a negative reaction among the people, which we do not want.”

He further mentioned, “When a person is shot and killed at the border, the entire country reacts, and that reaction is negative, which we don’t want.”

The foreign affairs advisor also said that the interim government would issue a “strong protest” over the recent killing of Bangladeshi teenager Jayanta Kumar by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Baliadangi border in Thakurgaon on Sunday night.

“We are waiting for confirmation from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) regarding the incident. Once we have that, we will issue a strong protest to New Delhi,” he added.

He reiterated that Bangladesh seeks to maintain good relations with India on the basis of “sovereign equality.”
