Former Minister of Social Welfare Dipu Moni has been arrested by the police. According to police reports, she was apprehended this evening from the Baridhara area of the capital.
At around 8 PM, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed Dipu Moni’s arrest.
A senior DMP official later informed Prothom Alo that Dipu Moni has been taken to the office of the DMP’s Detective Branch (DB). She has been shown arrested in connection with a murder case under Mohammadpur police station.
Dipu Moni is the Joint General Secretary of the Bangladesh Awami League. She previously served as the Foreign and Education Minister in the Awami League government.
On August 5, after facing a student-public movement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country. Following this, leaders of the Awami League and its affiliated and fraternal organizations went into hiding. The list includes former ministers, government officials, and individuals holding important positions in the state. Some of them have been arrested.
The first arrest of a minister from Sheikh Hasina’s government was reported on August 13. On that day, former Law Minister Anisul Huq and former Advisor to the Prime Minister on Private Industry and Investment Salman F Rahman were arrested from the Sadarghat area in Dhaka. They were later shown arrested in connection with a murder case filed at New Market police station, related to the death of a hawker during clashes near Dhaka College during the quota reform movement.
On August 14, DMP reported the arrests of former Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku, former State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and Tanvir Hasan Saikat, General Secretary of the Dhaka University branch of the Chhatra League. These three were reportedly arrested while in hiding in the Nikunja residential area under Khilkhet police station in a case filed at Paltan police station.
On the night of August 16, former Water Resources Minister and Awami League ex-MP Ramesh Chandra Sen was arrested from his home in Thakurgaon. He has also been shown arrested in connection with a murder case.
Additionally, on August 16, recently retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan, who was the Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC), was arrested. He has also been shown arrested in the New Market police station hawker murder case.
