The general holiday declared for National Mourning Day on August 15th has been canceled. The decision was approved today, Tuesday, in a meeting of the Advisory Council of the interim government.

The meeting of the Advisory Council was held at the state guesthouse Jamuna. Sources from the meeting revealed that the decision to cancel the general holiday for National Mourning Day on August 15th was approved based on widespread consensus during discussions between the Advisory Council and political parties.

The Cabinet Division is expected to issue a notification regarding the cancellation of the holiday, according to sources.

Under Sheikh Hasina’s government, August 15th was observed as National Mourning Day, commemorating the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Yesterday, Monday, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, held separate meetings with various political parties. In addition to the BNP-Jamaat, the Chief Advisor also met with Gono-Tantra Mancha, CPB, BASAD, National Liberation Council, AB Party, Bangladesh National Party (BJP), and both factions of the Gono Adhikar Parishad.

During the meetings, there were differing opinions on whether August 15th should continue to be observed as National Mourning Day in memory of the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Some parties advocated for canceling the observance, while others opposed its cancellation.
