A Qawwali event organized in memory of martyrs by local leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement at Tongi Government College, Gazipur, was disrupted by an attack, leaving 16 individuals injured.
Among those seriously injured are Shawon, Russel Mahmud, Rifat, Abdul Rifat, Mahmudur Rahman, and Parvez Hossain. The attack took place on Thursday, September 12, in the afternoon at Tongi Government College.
Police have arrested two Chhatra League members in connection with the incident. The arrested individuals are Salah Uddin Sadiq (21), son of Jalal Uddin from Alhamra Garden, Tongi, and Mamun Mia (17), son of Md. Enamul Haque from the Kha Para area.
According to one of the organizers, Abu Hanif, the incident occurred at approximately 5:15 PM, during a Qawwali performance and protest songs dedicated to the martyrs. Around 30 to 40 Chhatra League activists, armed with local weapons and machetes, attacked the event, injuring 16 people. The injured were initially taken to Tongi Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital, with four critically injured individuals later transferred to Dhaka. The organizers managed to detain two attackers, who were subsequently handed over to the police.
Parvez Hossain, one of the injured, has filed a case with Tongi West Police Station, identifying 40 individuals involved in the attack.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamruzzaman of Tongi West Police Station confirmed the incident to Kaler Kantho and stated that a case has been filed regarding the matter.
