To counter anti-India sentiments, Delhi is making efforts to find a third country to host Sheikh Hasina. Another clause in the agreement states that if there is a risk of long imprisonment or death after extradition, the request can be denied.

An official from India’s Ministry of External Affairs has stated that the relationship between the Indian government and Sheikh Hasina is historical. After the military coup on August 15, 1975, which resulted in the killing of Sheikh Hasina’s entire family, including her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Indira Gandhi provided refuge to Hasina and her sister, Sheikh Rehana. Over time, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana once again sought refuge in India. In this context, India could never hand them over to a “vindictive” government. Therefore, the option of providing them safe shelter in a third country is being considered.
