The government has appointed a lawyer to advocate for the release of 57 Bangladeshi nationals who were sentenced to various prison terms in Dubai. These individuals were penalized for participating in a protest against the quota reform movement in government jobs and for the incident related to the deaths during that protest.

Attorney Olora Afrin, a lawyer from the Bangladesh Supreme Court, has been appointed to lead this legal effort.

This decision was formally communicated through a notice issued on Monday by Mission Chief Muhammad Mizanur Rahman.

The Embassy of the United Arab Emirates will provide support to lawyer Afrin in this matter.

These workers, who were employed in Dubai, received their sentences following expedited trials conducted within just 48 hours on July 24. Among the sentences, three individuals received life imprisonment, 53 were sentenced to 10 years in prison, and one was sentenced to 11 years.

At the time, due to the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, the Embassy did not intervene in the matter.
