Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus has been appointed to head the country’s next interim government. This decision was reached during a meeting at Bangabhaban on Tuesday night, attended by President Md. Sahabuddin, the chiefs of the three armed forces, and the coordinators of the student movement.
In a statement released by Yunus Centre on Wednesday, Dr. Yunus addressed the nation. He said, “I extend my congratulations to the courageous students who led the movement, turning our second Victory Day into a reality. I also commend the general populace for their unwavering support of the students’ cause. Let us ensure that we capitalize on this new victory to its fullest potential. We must not allow this triumph to be undermined by any errors on our part. I urge everyone to remain peaceful and to avoid all forms of violence and destruction of property, whether movable or immovable. I call upon students and individuals from all political backgrounds to maintain calm.”
Dr. Yunus further stressed, “Our primary duty now is to protect and advance our beloved, beautiful, and immensely promising country for ourselves and for future generations. Our youth are ready to build a new world. We cannot afford to squander this opportunity through senseless violence. Violence is a common enemy to all. Please do not create adversaries. Stay calm and contribute to the rebuilding of the nation.”
In his address to the nation, Dr. Yunus concluded, “Please remain calm and assist those around you in maintaining peace as well.”
