Munshiganj, Bangladesh – In response to the anti-discrimination student movement’s call for a non-cooperation movement centered around a single demand, clashes erupted in Munshiganj between protesters, police, and Awami League leaders and activists. The violence resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals and injuries to at least 20 others.

The clashes took place around 10:45 AM on Sunday in the Super Market area of the city.

Md. Abu Hena Mohammad Jamal, the superintendent of Munshiganj General Hospital, confirmed the fatalities, stating, “We have not yet been able to confirm their identities. Over 20 injured people have come to the emergency department.”

The two deceased individuals were male laborers, aged between 22 and 25 years. Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police Thandar Khairul Hasan said, “We cannot yet confirm the exact number of casualties. However, the police did not fire any shots.”

The anti-discrimination student movement has called for a nationwide non-cooperation movement starting today, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet. Md. Nahid Islam, the coordinator of the organization leading the quota reform movement, announced this at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka at 5:30 PM yesterday.

In observance of National Mourning Day on August 15, the ruling Awami League has decided to take to the streets from today and continue their presence throughout August.
