Dhaka, July 23, 2024 — The Bangladesh government has intensified its actions against those involved in the recent quota movement, targeting both participants and those providing moral support.

A screenshot circulating on social media has revealed a letter from Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, signed by the Principal, Professor Dr. Shishir Ranjan Chakrabarti. The letter, addressed to Dr. Shakera Nargis, a Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy, issued a show cause notice accusing her of supporting the protesting students against the quota system in government services.

The notice alleges that Dr. Nargis attended demonstrations, provided guidance, and spoke at gatherings, thereby offering moral support to the students. Furthermore, it accuses her of nurturing sentiments against Bangladesh, its liberation war, and the founder of the nation.

Dr. Nargis has been given three days to respond with an explanation of her actions and to provide reasons why legal actions should not be taken against her.

This move is part of a broader government crackdown on the quota movement, which has seen significant public support and widespread protests. The government’s actions have sparked debate and concern over freedom of speech and the right to protest in Bangladesh.
